Republicans continue to make inroads with Latino, Chinese, and South Asian communities in Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. Can Democrats stop the realignment?
This was amazing. Thanks you! In terms of Brooklyn, you kept mentioning the lack of active political clubs. Are you able to speak more to that. When I left the show, Reformand DSA were trying to disrupt the Democratic political machine -- especially the KCDC. But there were more active clubs ( old school and reform) not fewer.. What happened to all the clubs?!!
Thanks Howard. I actually went into correct my post. The last thing we need on here is misinformation spreading because I need a new glasses prescription and can't read!
Thank you so much for this. I've been a poll worker for a long time (this is my fourth Presidential election) and what I'm seeing on the ground is a real split between homeowners and renters and those who are drawn to tough on crime policies and politicians. I think combatting misinformation, especially among non-English/limited English speaking groups (Latines and Asian Americans, especially, but also Europeans) has to be a priority. I do wonder if the effects of a second Trump administration will sway people, but I just don't know.
Anecdata on the Chan/Chu race: I was pretty confused by the Iwen Chu's mailers for this race, which on the policy side had a laser focus on "STEVE CHAN WILL TAKE AWAY YOUR RIGHT TO ABORTION" and never signaled her anti-shelter stance. (Or at least, the English-language ones didn't. Would be neat to see what policy stances get highlighted in which language.) Rather odd - made me think she was tuned in to the national conversation but not the local one.
Super helpful breakdown. I've been following similar trends in San Francisco as well. People have been surprised to see rightward shifts in our country's bluest cities.
Asian voters in SF were the most pro-Trump to begin with, and they also shifted the furthest toward him this year, some precincts as much as 20 percentage points. And less-educated areas were also likelier to shift to Trump.
The SF Chronicle did a great job with reporting. Here's a gift article since most New Yorkers probably don't subscribe 😂
DSA's got to "do the work" by prowling the local parks in south Brooklyn and lecturing our tai chi grannies about "False Consciousness." And if they complain about being menaced by future astronauts, bust out the "Chinese Exclusion Act" to remind them that the real enemy is evil whitey. That'll keep the fragile intersectional coalition intact.

You misread; the 54th did not go Republican; Harris carried the district 20,399 to 6136

Howard!!!!!!!
Best piece I’ve read on the election results for NYC! 🙏 thank you for your thorough and insightful work, hopeful that more people take note 👏

Fantastic reporting and analysis. Thanks for this!

That's what she was running on in State Senate race? Wow.
Just on the policy end, anyway. Her big attack line - a pretty good one, imo! - was about health violations in apartments "Slumlord Steve" owned.

Do I have this right; you diagnose a City full of fear of crime, and then put in a plug for a Mayoral candidate who wants to defund the Police?
